There is a local and national crisis for housing for individuals with disabilities. Over 870,000 adults with developmental disabilities are living with caregivers aged 60 years or older. In 2016, an estimated 87,000 people with significant disabilities were homeless and between 200,000 and 300,000 people with disabilities were living in institutions, nursing facilities and other segregated environments.
Our latest project, “Church Street House” is a Community Residential Home (group home) that will serve 6 male residents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The home will be owned by the Autism Project of Palm Beach County, Inc. (APPBC), and will be located within walking distance of The Els Center of Excellence in Jupiter, Florida.
The “Church Street House” will be the APPBC’s second Community Residential Home and the goals of our project include:
-
Provide purpose-built housing and 24 hour, 7 days a week support services for 6 adults with ASD.
-
Serve as a model for other organizations and individuals seeking to provide housing near The Els Center of Excellence, which currently serves over 250 individuals with autism daily.
-
Collaborate with the Els for Autism Foundation in creating innovative adult services programs as our residents require.
-
Support and assist our residents with vocational training and employment opportunities.
